When the Pattern Begins to Emerge
Looking back, the individual threads of transition often begin to reveal a beautiful pattern. Discover how stepping back to notice what keeps emerging can bring greater clarity, confidence, and direction for the road ahead.

Design Your Change Series | Part 5
Have you ever looked closely at the back of a tapestry? If you're standing just inches away, all you see are loose threads. Some are bright. Some are dark. Some seem to stop abruptly. Others weave in unexpected directions. From that perspective, it doesn't make much sense.
But then you step back. Suddenly, what looked like a collection of disconnected threads begins to reveal a beautiful pattern.
I think transitions often work the same way. When we're in the middle of change, it's easy to focus on individual experiences. One conversation. One opportunity. One disappointment. One experiment. One unexpected door opening—or closing.
On their own, those moments may not tell us very much. But over time, something remarkable begins to happen. Patterns emerge.
Throughout this Design Your Change series, we've talked about taking the next faithful step, designing thoughtful experiments, and paying attention to what those experiences teach us. Now it's time to step back and look at the bigger picture. What have these experiences been revealing?
One of the questions I often ask coaching clients is,
"What patterns or themes keep showing up?"
Perhaps every time you mentor someone, you come away energized. Or, every opportunity that once looked impressive leaves you feeling empty. Perhaps this or that experiment has confirmed what matters most to you.
Or maybe you've discovered something just as valuable. "This no longer fits.” Sometimes the greatest gift of transition isn't finding a new direction. It's letting go of an old one.
Over time, those observations become more than isolated experiences. They become patterns. And noticing patterns leads to confidence. Not because every question has been answered. But because you've faithfully paid attention.
Looking back on my own journey, I can see this much more clearly now. When my family moved to Central Asia in 1996, I couldn't possibly have imagined that one decision would lead to two decades of life and ministry overseas. There was no master plan. No certainty about how the story would unfold.
But over the years, patterns began to emerge. I discovered gifts I didn't know I had. I found purpose and fulfillment in mentoring and coaching others. I even learned that I could be content providing administrative support in the background. I learned that some opportunities fit who God had created me to be, while others did not.
Those patterns didn't appear overnight. They emerged through years of walking, listening, serving, learning, and trusting. The same may be true for you. Perhaps God hasn't been hiding His direction. Perhaps He's been revealing it one thread at a time.
As you step back, what do you notice? What has consistently given you life? What has repeatedly felt out of alignment? What invitations keep resurfacing? Where do your gifts, values, relationships, and opportunities seem to be converging?
Don't rush past those questions. They may be the very places where God has been quietly shaping your next season. Confidence rarely arrives because we've eliminated every uncertainty. More often, it grows because we've learned to recognize the patterns of God's faithful leading.
That's the beautiful invitation of transition. Not simply arriving somewhere new. But becoming someone who knows how to walk with God through every new season that lies ahead.
Responding to the Invitation
Take a few moments this week to step back and reflect on your own journey over the past six to twelve months.
Ask yourself:
What patterns have I been noticing?
What experiences have consistently given me life?
What no longer fits who God is shaping me to become?
What invitations keep resurfacing?
Where do I sense growing confidence—not because I have all the answers, but because I've been faithfully paying attention?
Simply notice any patterns or themes beginning to emerge.

P.S. If you've journeyed through this entire series, you've experienced the heart of my coaching approach. Together we've explored how to discern what's happening beneath the surface, discover what matters most, and design thoughtful next steps with faith and intention.
If you're ready to move from reading about transition to intentionally navigating your own, I'd be honored to walk alongside you. Sometimes what we need most isn't another resource or another plan. We need a thoughtful companion who can help us notice the patterns, recognize God's invitations, and move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.
You don't have to navigate your next season alone.
